First Food Bar's cupid's arrow drink

Lindeman's and Guinness Stout combine to make the Cupid's Arrow at First Food & Bar, Las Vegas.

Have we told you how much we *heart* FIRST Food and Bar at The Palazzo?  No?  Then let us count the ways:

  1. FIRST feels like one of those secret out-of-the-way joints that only “insiders” know about.  Really.  To get there, you have to go to the second floor of the retail shopping area connecting the Venetian to the Palazzo; hang a right at Barney’s New York; and then make your way down the corridor to the barely-marked restaurant.  (We had a hard time just getting past the shoe display in Barneys’ windows.)
  2. It’s open late — ’til 1 a.m. during the week and even later on weekends.
  3. The front-of-the-house manager stops by — more than once — to check on your food, drinks, service, etc.  On our last visit, we felt like “regulars” by the end of the meal.
  4. The food:  big yummy portions of amped-up diner food.  Burgers to blackened steak, pasta to pizza: this is comfort food meant to help banish your hangover (or get you poised to work on a new one.)
  5. Brunch sandwich at First Food Bar Las Vegas.

Hearty breakfast sammie with Tater Tots at First Food Bar at the Palazzo, Vegas.

Sunday brunch (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.) — A traveling Bloody Mary bar complete with a cute mixologist ready to make it your way.  (Our way?  Extra Tabasco and black pepper plus enough green olives to mimic a salad bar.)  A $10 per person all-you-can-drink champagne deal.  This may not be Krug or Cristal but face it, there’s something abnormally fun and decadent about washing down your corned beef hash or chicken and waffles with a glass or two — or eight — of bubbly.  Try the Breakfast Mini-Burgers with cheese, bacon, Hollandaise sauce and a side of Tater Tots.

  6. The Cupid’s Arrow — Just like drinking an alcoholic dark chocolate truffle.  Take a bottle of Guinness Stout and a bottle of Lindeman’s Framboise Ale then pour them — simultaneously — into an iced schooner.  Drink.  Drink.  Burp.  Drink.
  7. Strip view.  Grab a spot near the windows and gaze out onto Treasure Island and, if the sun has set, the pirate battle show.

The newest room deal from The Venetian in Las Vegas continues the $119 weekday/$159 weekend room offer that has been so popular since first being announced back in October.  Along with the fantastic rates, the package (available on select dates) includes not only the luxury room suite but also the following enticements:

Bouchon at The Venetian Beguiles with Perfect Bistro Cuisine

Friday, November 14th, 2008
Bouchon Las Vegas

Bouchon Las Vegas at The Venetian serves French bistro favorites with quality and precision.

Our favorite restaurant reviewer visits Bouchon at The Venetian —

Bouchon is an odd but worthy bird. Perched far away from the hubbub of The Venetian’s casino and shops, this brain-child of chef Thomas Keller is a shining example of “The Disneyland Effect”. That phenomenon is the re-working of a familiar entity, like New Orleans’s French Quarter, which ends up far grander, glossier and more polished than the real thing ever was.

In this case, the restaurant designer has taken the notion of a Parisian bistro and blown it up into an idealized, sanitized, over-sized and utterly beguiling stage set. Minus the nicotine stained walls and crusty old waiters, Bouchon is all the right stuff writ large — (more…)

Hotel Deals that Make Me Want to Live in Las Vegas this December

Wynn Las Vegas offers a winter getaway for you and your friends.

Wynn Las Vegas offers a winter getaway for you and your friends.

P.B. and I have always been big fans of heading to Las Vegas before the Christmas holidays.  We get a little shopping done, take in the holiday decorations — especially the winter display at The Bellagio’s Conservatory and Botanical Gardens — and just kick back and enjoy some down-time during what can be a pretty hectic time of year.  We’ve never found December to be particularly busy in Las Vegas and with the economy in such a downturn we look for it to be even quieter this year so here’s your chance to enjoy the city at a much more relaxed pace and at some great prices. Best Places to People-Watch in Las Vegas

Friday, November 7th, 2008
Spago Las Vegas offers world-class people-watching opportunities.

Spago Las Vegas offers world-class people-watching opportunities.

If people-watching was ever named an Olympic sport, I would be the Michael Phelps of that competition.  Really.  No, seriously, I would take home all the gold medals every four years.  Just ask P.B.

So what better place is there than Las Vegas to grab a drink and sit and watch a microcosm of the world pass by?  Hence, (I love that word – I think I was a lawyer in a past life!) I have compiled this list of Top Spots on The Strip for enjoying the “People Parade” in all its glorious diversity.

10.  Wolfgang Puck’s Spago at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.  Order a thin-crusted roasted mushroom pizza, a glass of red, sit back and enjoy.  Offers lots of passers-by as well as great views of shoppers trolling the goods at high-end spots like Christian Dior and Loro Piana.

9.  Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville near the Flamingo.  There’s a small outside stand-up balcony for watching the traffic — on foot and on wheels — go by while you sip, what else?, an ice-cold tequila concoction. (more…)

Owner of The Palazzo -- Las Vegas Sands Corp. -- sees troubled times ahead.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. — owner of The Venetian and The Palazzo casino resorts on the Strip in Las Vegas, plus the Macau Venetian, Sands and Four Seasons — said in a regulatory filing today that it probably won’t meet the requirements of loans arranged by Citigroup Inc., Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. unless it cuts spending on developments, boosts earnings at its Las Vegas Strip casinos and raises more capital. Halloween Parties in Las Vegas Offer Revelers Spooky, Sexy Fun

Friday, October 24th, 2008
Party all day and night at Harrah's Halloween Las Vegas.

Party all day and night Halloween weekend at Harrah's Las Vegas.

Okay, so you’ve decided to let someone else hand out the Kit Kats while you cash in on one of those great Las Vegas hotel deals I told you about yesterday and you’re heading to Sin City for Halloween.  Now it’s time to check out the coolest parties going at the hottest clubs on and around The Strip all weekend long.  Here’s a list of just some of the most popular events scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Beginning Thursday, October 30, at NOON, Harrah’s turns their Carnaval Court into a huge outdoor Halloween bash complete with live entertainment, costume contests, Halloween-themed cocktails (no doubt tied into event-sponsor Bacardi,) psychics, tarot card readers and more.  The “Superheroes & Villains” party happens Thursday and Friday from noon – 3 AM each day.

Studio 54 at MGM Grand transforms their 22,000 square-foot club into a Halloween fright-fest for the week and especially for their 42nd Annual Beaux Arts Ball on Thursday and the “Nightmare on 54th Streetgala on Friday.  The Beaux Arts Ball is one of Las Vegas’ biggest fall bashes with lots of special guests, elaborate costumes, exclusive entertainment and more all benefiting the charity Golden Rainbow, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting those living with HIV/AIDS in Southern Nevada.

Taolloween 3 with guest DJ and mistress of ceremonies Tera Patrick takes place Friday night at hotter-than-hot 10,000 square-foot nightclub TAO at The Venetian.  This club, with its 40-foot balcony offering stunning views of the Las Vegas Strip, is one of the premier clubs in Vegas and has one of the longest entrance lines in town so plan accordingly.

New in September to the Las Vegas Strip and brought to you by the creators of TAO is LAVO at The Palazzo.  Their first Halloween party is creating major buzz by bringing in the cast of “Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular” from neighboring Venetian to host the club’s Masquerade Ball on Friday.

The Palms — the off-Strip, über-popular resort — is hosting events at its venues Rain, The Playboy Club, Ghostbar and at the rooftop Moon where guests will find J-Roc’s Halloween Bash featuring the popular “Girls Next Door’s” Bridget and Holly.  Costume contests abound – think “Best Sci-Fi” at Moon, “Best Undead” at Ghostbar – with more than $100,000 in cash and prizes to be awarded.

Saturday, The Orleans Arena will be the site of what event producers are calling the largest-ever Las Vegas Nightlife Party – The Fabulous Festival.  Outdoor stages as well as the indoor arena will be home to an all-night extravaganza combining dance, music, performance art and more.  You’ve just got to check out their website for the line-up of musicians, dancers and other performers – FabulousFest.
