Paris Las Vegas sign at night

Home to Barry Manilow, Paris LV is hoping new nightclub Chateau attracts its own set of fans.

March in Las Vegas means much more than basketball this year.  Coming in like a lion, March pretty much stays that way all month long with performances from some top names in music plus the much-anticipated opening of the new nightclub at Paris Las Vegas and the return of Celine Dion to Caesars Palace.

Let’s start with the opening of Chateau Nightclub & Gardens at Paris.  Making its debut on March 4, Caesar’s hopes this newest entry into the hot Las Vegas club scene will impress guests with its phenomenal Strip-side location and outdoor dance floor and cabanas.  (We’re going to miss the gorgeous fountain they removed to make way for this club but, hey, we understand — commerce is commerce.)

Two stories of club action and six bars dotting a 40,000-square-foot venue will merge such seemingly disparate features as lushly-classic French gardens and architecture with DJ’s spinning “an eclectic blend of house, dance, hip-hop and mainstream music. “

The Grand Opening on March 5 features an appearance by Drake while on March 25, Flo Rida checks in to see if this club can handle him – or not.  And what club in Vegas worth its designer-vodka drinks and scantily-clad servers doesn’t have an upcoming visit from at least one or more of the Jersey Shore crowd?  The Chateau doesn’t disappoint with scheduled appearances by “The Situation” plus a Sammi Sweetheart birthday bash.

Tomorrow – March’s must-see concerts in Las Vegas.  In the meantime, enjoy this Flo Rida video —

Dogs playing poker tin sign

Dogs are welcome at eight Caesars properties where bad beat jackpots are paid in kibble and Nylabones.

You know the look.  The one you get as soon as you pull out the good suitcase and start packing it with all your Vegas finery.  The guilt-inducing look that says “So I’m off to the kennel while you go have all the fun.” (Personally, we get the “We’re stuck here with Aunt Marge (who still hasn’t figured out that we like our dinner microwaved for 28 seconds not 30) while you go dine at Guy Savoy” – death stare.)

Well, fret no more:  Caesars Entertainment now welcomes your canine friends at eight of their Las Vegas properties.  The new PetStay program debuted in October at Caesars Palace, the Rio and Imperial Palace and now includes Paris, Bally’s, Planet Hollywood, Harrah’s and the Flamingo.  The program seems to be doing quite well as we saw a number of dogs out and about during our last visit to Caesars Palace.  And, yes, we mean the four-legged variety.  Sort of.

In addition to the $25 (Imperial Palace) to $40 (Caesars Palace) upcharge per night, there are some rules and restrictions:

* Dogs staying at any of the participating hotels must weigh 50 pounds or less and be present at the time of check- in.

* Up to 2 dogs per room are allowed.

* Dogs are permitted to walk through designated common areas while on a leash and accompanied by the owner.  (Damn, we figured we’d stick a leash on them and let ’em run wild through the sports book while we hit the spa.)

* Can only play blackjack if they know not to split 10’s.

Okay, so we made up that last one.  Sort of.

For more info on pet-friendly hotels in Las Vegas, visit the Caesars website for all the PetStay policies.

Busy Barry Manilow opens March 5 at Paris Las Vegas Theater

Barry Manilow's new CD, "The Greatest Love Songs of All Time," hit the streets today.

Barry Manilow's new CD, "The Greatest Love Songs of All Time," hit the streets today.

Promising “something new” and a production “definitely not to be missed,” Barry Manilow will begin a new two-year stint at Paris Las Vegas on March 5. The mega-hit singer will perform 78 shows each year in the 1500-seat Paris Theater at the Harrah’s-owned property and tickets for the new Manilow show – including tickets for opening night! – are available online and at the Paris box office.

Manilow has been out and about quite a bit lately with appearances on one of Conan O’Brien’s last “Tonight Show” episodes, an interview on “Access Hollywood” as well as hosting his very own QVC special on January 19 to hawk his newest song collection, The Greatest Love Songs of All Time.  This newest CD dropped today and is already #10 on the Amazon sales list.

The new show at Paris comes on the heels of his long-time run at the Las Vegas Hilton which began in February 2005 and claimed gross ticket sales of more than $70 million over the years. The new show is under the direction of Jeffrey Hornaday (Flashdance, A Chorus Line, High School Musical), and Manilow promises an all-new production for his legion of “Fanilows.”

Hotel Deals that Make Me Want to Live in Las Vegas this December

Wynn Las Vegas offers a winter getaway for you and your friends.

Wynn Las Vegas offers a winter getaway for you and your friends.

P.B. and I have always been big fans of heading to Las Vegas before the Christmas holidays.  We get a little shopping done, take in the holiday decorations — especially the winter display at The Bellagio’s Conservatory and Botanical Gardens — and just kick back and enjoy some down-time during what can be a pretty hectic time of year.  We’ve never found December to be particularly busy in Las Vegas and with the economy in such a downturn we look for it to be even quieter this year so here’s your chance to enjoy the city at a much more relaxed pace and at some great prices. Vote for Best – and Worst – of Las Vegas in Annual “Trippies”

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008
Vegas Tripping let you vote on favs and failures.

Vegas Tripping lets you vote on favs and failures.

Best slots.  Best video poker.  Best table games.  Best cocktail waitress uniforms.  Worst buffet.  Worst casino.  Worst overall.  Vegas Tripping wants to know who – or what – you think should take home the prize in these and lots of other categories for the site’s 2008 Trippies Awards

Here are my choices — designated in boldface — in just a couple of categories:

  • Best OverallBellagio, Caesars Palace, MGM Grand, Orleans, Wynn Las Vegas –  Love the decor, Jean Philippe pastries, the Conservatory, the Chihuly ceiling in the reception area, the Lake Show, the restaurants, the pool – the whole vibe.
  • Worst Overall – Casino Royale, Circus Circus, Hooters, Imperial Palace, Tropicana – Smells bad, weird layout and I never win anything there plus it’s too easy to rag on the Circus.
  • Best Cocktail Waitress Uniforms – Caesars Palace, Orleans, Rio, Paris, Wynn Las Vegas – These outfits stick in my head.  Royal blue and boobs.  What more do you want?
  • Best Buffet – Caesars Palace, Bellagio, MGM Grand, Wynn Las Vegas, The Venetian – Beautiful food in a beautiful setting for beautiful people.
  • Best Signage/NeonFlamingo, New York New York, Wynn Las Vegas, MGM Grand, Caesars Palace – That flashing, clashing orange and pink just says “Vegas” to me.  I still remember my first ride down The Strip in the early-80’s (back when you could actually hit 35mph) and seeing that riot of glowing neon.  Sigh.

So, do your duty as a citizen or denizen of Las Vegas and go vote at Vegas Tripping.

Plan Your Las Vegas Trip…Just a Little Even…Please

Donnie & Marie fans should purchase tickets before leaving for Las Vegas.

Donny & Marie fans should purchase tickets before leaving for Las Vegas.

Yeah, I admit it – I sometimes eavesdrop on other people’s conversations. Especially when they are sitting three feet away and TALKING REALLY LOUDLY. On our last trip to Las Vegas, P.B. and I were enjoying lunch at one of our fav restaurants – Mon Ami Gabi at Paris Las Vegas – when I overheard the couple next to us discussing what they wanted to do during their stay. Well, that’s not exactly correct – let’s say they were discussing how they had NO CLUE what to do while in Las Vegas. Here they are in one of the most exciting cities in the world and they can’t decide if they want to see a show…what show to see…where to eat dinner…you name it. Later that day- call it kismet – I was reading an article that said 80% of people visiting Las Vegas don’t know what they want to do once they get there. What a waste of time, energy and vacation dollars!

I visit a lot of Las Vegas forums on the ‘net and this seems to be a popular topic:  “To Plan or Not to Plan” – that is the question.  For me, the answer is definitely PLAN!  Okay, I’m not saying plan every minute or even every day but it just makes sense to me to do some research before going so you’re not wasting precious time standing in line at restaurants or theater box offices.  If there is one thing that is lacking on the ‘net (and I’m not sure there is) it is NOT info on Las Vegas. Buy show tickets – like those to see Donny & Marie at The Flamingo.  Make dinner reservations. Book your spa day. Look up what games are available at each casino so you can maximize your playing time.  Whatever it is you definitely want to do while in Las Vegas – or at any vacation destination, for that matter – make your plans and any necessary reservations before you get to where you’re going!

As many times as we have been to Las Vegas, P.B. and I always go armed with a list of hot new Las Vegas restaurants we want to try (usually complete with reservations) as well as anything else we don’t want to miss like shows, slot tournaments and other events. Check out other areas on our site plus VisitLasVegas.com  for things you might want to incorporate into your trip.

“Favorite Slots” is a Hot Topic on TripAdvisor Las Vegas Forum

"Gold Fish" - a popular slot game from WMS Gaming.

For a spirited discussion on “favorite slot machines,” visit TripAdvisor and check out what people are talking about right now in regards to slot machines. This is one hot topic on TripAdvisor considering the original post asking Las Vegas visitors to name their favorite slots game is dated August 24th and the replies keep coming – six pages of them so far.

I don’t play slots too often but always stop and check out any new games I see  – think eBay®, Deal or No Deal® – and any games that seem to have a lot of people gathered ‘round.

From the topic replies, it looks like “Gold Fish” from WMS gaming is a hot slot favorite.  I mention this one specifically because P.B. and I walked by a double bank of the machines several times during our last stay at Paris Las Vegas and not once was there a machine open.  People were even hanging around waiting for machines to open up so they could play.  Hmm, based on its popularity, maybe we’ll check it out again when we go to Vegas later this month.

The hot new "Wizard of Oz" from WMS Gaming.

The hot new "Wizard of Oz" slot machine from WMS Gaming.

We recently saw this new game at Harrah’s Ak-Chin near Phoenix  – “The Wizard of Oz” from WMS Gaming (for information, click on the game icon in this cool virtual gameroom.)  Check out the high-backed spaceship seating for this game.  Here’s what the manufacturer says about it on their website:   “The Wizard of OzTM is the newest theme in the revolutionary “Sensory Immersion Gaming” product category, where players hear, see, and feel the experience, thanks to real-time 3D animation and our innovative gaming chair that features the BOSE® 3SpaceTM audio system and CPU-NXT®2 enhanced graphics.” Again, we didn’t get a chance to play since all the machines were taken but we will definitely play Wizard of Oz slots in the future — when we get the chance.

If you’re a slots player, I’d love to hear about your favorite game and where you play it.  Also, check out the thread on TripAdvisor and chime in with your recommendations.
